Our first Martineau ancestor in the New World, 1656

Our ancestor, Louis Martineau, who came to Quebec, New France in 1656 was from the parish of St-Savinien sur Charente, in Saintonge, France.  Louis Martineau was baptised 25 Aug 1624 at St. Savinien church.  He was the son of Jean & Mathurine (Bonne) Martineau of the village of La Grande Thibaudière, which is just southwest of St-Savinien.  This village is just 2 miles north of Taillebourg, site of several famous battles between England and France during the 100 years wars and later.  See Google map below:

He departed France from the port of La Rochelle and arrived in Quebec on 15 Jun 1656.  On 20 Nov 1660, he purchased land on the north side of Ile d'Orléans (Isle of Orleans), Quebec, in the parish of Sainte-Famille.

On 9 Apr 1663, Louis Martineau married Madeleine Marcotte at Château-Richer.  He died on 28 May 1709 at St-François de Ile d'Orléans.  His wife Madeleine had died prior to him, at l'Hotel-Dieu de Québec on 17 Sep 1698.
